چکیده

In the literature, a deficiency of magnesium or vitamin B1 in alcoholics is considered of etiologic importance in the development of delirium tremens or alcoholic encephalopathy (AE). As AE are comprised mnestic disorders, so severe as to lead to social invalidation, Korsakoff syndrome and dementia. Upon admission, the plasma concentrations of magnesium and vitamin B1 were determined in cases with alcoholism (56) or delirium tremens (43). Magnesium was as low in alcoholics as in delirium tremens cases (m-2 S.D.), vitamin B1 was in the alcoholics just below the 95 percent confidence level but very low in the delirium tremens group. The recovered cases had slightly subnormal plasma concentrations of magnesium (m-1a2 S.D.) and vitamin B1 upon admission, as did the AE cases admitted with alcoholism. Just the AE cases that were admitted with delirium tremens showed very low levels of magnesium (m-3 S.D.) and of vitamin B1 Dept. of Psychiatry, Radboud Hospital Theodoor Craanenlaan 4 6500 HB Nijmegen The Netherlands Paper read at the AOP 10th Anniversary Symposion, New Orleans, 9th May 1981. upon admission. It is concluded that a delirium tremens does not arise because of a magnesium deficiency, possibly in relation to a vitamin B1 deficiency. An AE is not caused by a pure magnesium deficiency, while a vitamin B1 deficiency is of some importance only in AE cases who were admitted with delirium. A combined deficiency of magnesium and vitamin B1 is not important to AE. AE can arise without any deficiency of magnesium or vitamin B1 in alcoholics.

Plasma calcium, copper, magnesium, and zinc concentrations in patients with the alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

We determined zinc, copper, magnesium, and calcium concentrations by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in the plasma of 30 patients hospitalized for treatment of seizures during a period of alcohol withdrawal. Those patients who developed delirium tremens or a prolonged hallucinatory state had significantly higher plasma copper concentrations (P = 0.026), significantly lower zinc concentratio...

Rapid Death Due to Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome: Case Report and Review of Literature

Background: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is one of the most serious complications associated with chronic alcoholism. Sudden deaths are not uncommon in AWS. In severe stages of AWS, delirium tremens (DT) occurs, which is characterized with agitation, global confusion, disorientation, visual and auditory hallucinations in addition to autonomic hyperactivity. Case report: A 30-year old man, ...

Thiamine absorption in alcoholic delirium patients.

OBJECTIVE The role of a deficiency of vitamin B1 in the development of alcoholic complaints is confined to the case of the Wernicke-Korsakov syndrome. Findings concerning a deficiency of thiamine in alcoholics in comparison with normal persons are contradictory and there are no differentiated tests in the case of delirium tremens. In this study the vitamin B1 absorption in patients with deliriu...

Morphine for Intravenous Patient-Controlled Analgesia May Inhibit Delirium Tremens

Alcoholism is common among trauma patients and often lacks the appropriate monitoring. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), including delirium tremens (DT), can be associated with significant postoperative morbidity and mortality. However, appropriate acute pain management may protect against delirium; the administration of intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV - PCA) may not only alleviat...

A STUDY of serum electrolyte bevels in the alcoholic was undertaken in view of the reports from Flink and his associates 1,2 of the frequent occurrence of low serum magnesium levels in the chronic alcoholic with delirium tremens, with the improvement of the tremor, handwriting, and hallucinations in these patients occurring with magnesium therapy. As other electrolyte changes were not documente...
